The school was founded in 1949. There are 8 key projects of the Science Fund, 102 other projects, 4 national soft science major projects, 47 humanities and social science projects of the Ministry of Education, 1 international bidding project, and 19 provincial social science fund major projects. The number of national, provincial and ministerial projects is among the best in the provincial colleges and universities of Hunan Province. At present, it is the only university in Hunan Province that has won the first, second and third prizes for the outstanding scientific research achievements of the Ministry of Education (Humanities and Social Sciences). The school has become increasingly popular in foreign exchanges, and has established cooperative education and inter-school exchanges with more than 10 universities and research institutions in the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, and Ireland.
